Changes of Microclimates and Response of Garlic Growth by Supplemental Lighting and Tunnel in the Plastic Film House

Abstract
This study was carried out to estimate microclimate changes and garlic growth in the polyethylene (PE) film house influenced by different growing conditions. The air temperature was higher around 2¡É in PE tunnel than outdoor, and the night air temperature in the tunnel was higher around 1¡É by supplemental lighting. But the soil temperature was not affected by tunnel or lighting treatments. The solar radiation was decreased by 30% in PE tunnel compared to outdoor. The plant height and length of leaf sheath were higher in low storage temperature of seed garlic than in room storage temperature throughout experimental periods, and the leaf width was not different. The plant height in tunnel was consistently higher than in the control, and the neck diameter, number of leaf, leaf length, and leaf width were shown differently after the middle of growth period. In lighting treatment, the plant height was higher at early stage, but the length of leaf sheath was higher at the late stage than in the control. After harvesting, the bulb diameter was slightly thickened in low storage temperature, but the bulb weight was heavier in the control. The leaf width and No. of leaves were increased by tunnel with supplemental lighting. Correlation coefficients were shown as positive values between growth characteristics (plant height and length of leaf sheath) and microclimates (air temperature, soil temperature, and solar radiation), and the regression coefficient was also significant among them.
